Jacob was born in the Kingdom of Saxony and immigrated to the U.S. aboard the bark ship, Argonaut (3 masted ship) with his wife and then five children. The Keehr family arrived in New York in October of 1871 and shortly after moved west to St. Paul, MN where they remained for about six months. The family then moved to Sauk Rapids in Benton County where Jacob worked on neighboring farms. After living in Sauk Rapids for two years, he moved his family to Buckman Township, where he homesteaded 80 acres of land and farmed until his death in 1914. Jacob was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Dixville, MN, which is pictured on the main page.

Jacob and his wife both signed their name Kühr which is how it appeared on the ship's manifest as well as the document of permission of marriage for a minor that they signed for their son Fred.
